Erika Aklufi runs the LA Marathon

Brentwood-10K-09Erika made us all proud of her today by running in the LA Marathon. She was the 14th woman overall, running an impressive time on a not so easy course of 2:54.30. She was the 14th fastest woman to cross the line on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica. Erika was not feeling all that great, as to be expected after running so many miles at the speed she was going, when she entered into the city of Santa Monica but she was pleasantly surprised to find a police escort for the final few miles which lifted her up more than words could describe (Erika is a Santa Monica officer). Her officer friends were duly impressed with her as well as a group of Janes cheering her on at the finish line. We are all so proud of Erika!

Barbara Parker at Indoor Worlds

3000 2 early onBarbara had a solid performance in the first round of the 3000 meters at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar on March 12th. She ran 9:01.52 for fifth in the first round. She was .11 seconds out of fourth place. The first four out of each heat plus the next four fastest timesĀ  advance to the final, but unfortunately, the second heat was much faster. With the 2008 World Indoor champion in the 3000, Meseret Defar, in second heat, that was bound to happen. Defar was the eventual winner of the final race running 8:51.17.

Barbara was the fastest British women in the race which prompted a visit from Olympian, world record holder and fellow countryman, Sebastian Coe. It was the highlight of the meet for Barbara! For complete results, click here.

Rest in Peace, Doug Speck

On Thursday, March 4th at 10:07 pm, California and national track and field and cross country lost an invaluable friend of the sport. Doug Speck, the DyeStatCal.com co-editor, Southern California meet announcer and USATF involved, passed away after a two year bout with melanoma cancer. Doug worked with Kirsten, the GM of DyeStat, for the past four years and was a close friend. Doug has touched the lives of many young and now retired or current elite athletes in one way or another while he reported on them. He was reporting on Tania, Sylvia and Kirsten while they were in high school and even before that which shows how long he’s been involved in track and field and cross country. Southern California USATF association wrote up a great article on Doug here. Here is the story on Doug on DyeStatCal as well information on Doug’s recent award he received from the NSSF.

We will miss you greatly in so many ways, my friend.
