Yoga benefits runners because it promotes strength and flexibility in key muscle groups. Runners chief complaints are tight hamstrings and hips. As these muscles get shortened, muscle tightness puts stresses on tendons and joints. Yoga poses help reduce tension in those and other areas of your body that become tight and sore from running.
